About Us

Company details
THE SCIENTIFIC AND PRACTICAL MEDICAL CENTER FOR PEDIATRIC CARDIOLOGY AND CARDIAC SURGERY OF THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH OF UKRAINE (shortened name – Ukrainian Children’s Cardiac Center, hereinafter – UCCC) is a leading institution of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine in the field of pediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery, a major research and medical center specializing in diagnosis, medical treatment and surgical correction of congenital heart and vessel defects in children. UCCC is the only medical institution with high specialization in Ukraine; therefore, UCCC offers surgical correction of the most complicated congenital heart defects, regardless of the patient’s age.

UCCC is the largest specialized clinic in Europe which performs over 3 000 operations annually. The mortality rate in UCCC comprises 1,2%, which is comparable with top pediatric cardiac surgery clinics in Europe and the USA. As a result of UCCC activities, the infant mortality rate in Ukraine has significantly decreased and even got closer to the mortality rate in Europe.

UCCC was a first in developing and implementation of a diagnostic program “Fetal Heart” in Ukraine. The program makes it possible to diagnose heart defects in a fetus. UCCC implemented the CorD program, which was recognized by the world medical community; thus, the program was unofficially mentioned as the “Ukrainian Method”. According to this method, cardiac surgery on newborns involves the use of their own umbilical cord blood instead of the donor blood. UCCC is currently working on launching the elderly patients’ assistance program, “Longevity-Cardio,” with the aim to improve life expectancy as well as the quality of life.

Daily procedures at the Clinic for Children of UCCC include the examination of above 70 patients, 6-8 heart surgeries, and up to 5 interventional operations. Services provided by the clinic are completely FREE OF CHARGE.

The Clinic for Adults provides a full range of cardiac services for adult patients as well as for the patients with grown-up congenital heart (GUCH) disease. This is the only clinic in Ukraine that offers treatment procedures for adults who have been through cardiac surgery in childhood. Annually, 25000 patients are examined, 800 operations are performed, and 1600 interventional and 700 electrophysiological procedures are carried out.

UCCC specialized personnel consists of 10 MDs and 23 PhDs. UCCC’s specialists are active members of European, American and world professional medical associations, such as the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS) and the European Congenital Heart Surgeons Association (ECHSA). They continuously present their scientific works at the annual congresses of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS) and the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS). High service quality contributes to the constant increase in the number of patients from abroad. Most of them travel from Moldova, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Central Asian countries.

Major highlights of UCCC:

1992 – first arterial switch operation using cardiopulmonary bypass in the former Soviet Union;

2009 – first operation on a newborn using its own umbilical cord blood (Cor-D program) in the world;

2010 – first hybrid angioplasty of pulmonary veins in Ukraine;

2010 – first simultaneous correction of a complex heart defect and radical removal of liver tumor in Ukraine;

2010 – first Nikaidoh operation in Ukraine;

2011 – first neonatal Ross operation in Ukraine;

2012 – first Ross II operation in Ukraine;

2013 – first cone reconstruction of a tricuspid valve in Ukraine;

2014 – first atrioventricular valve replacement with a cylindrical prosthesis in Ukraine;

2016 – first transcatheter implantation of the Xpand® aortic valve prosthesis in the world;

2016 – first transcatheter implantation of the HighLife® mitral valve prosthesis in the world;

2019 – first transcatheter aortic valve implantation to a 97-year-old patient in Ukraine.

Over the years of its activities, the specialists of UCCC have performed:

270973 Outpatients

44324 Admissions

21264 Operations

8863 Infants operated on heart

SERVICES

We are able to follow the development of any new devices during In Vitro,In Vivo,Animal and clinical studies.As an example is new HighLife TMVR device where we performed 4 procedures as a clinical trial and performed for those patients 3 year follow up.Another product is Xpand TAVI device.Where we performed all 4 stages of a new TAVI device from In Vivo till a medical license on a Ukrainian market.

By dint of the modern diagnostic equipment (electrocardiographic and echocardiographic systems, radiological, angiographic, and electrophysiological equipment), UCCC’s specialists diagnose patients with cardiac problems promptly.

In accordance with the latest techniques, UCCC performs cardiosurgical operations of any complexity, including but not limited to, total arterial revascularization in coronary heart disease, valve reconstruction using patient’s own tissues, minimally invasive surgery of heart valves and coronary heart diseases, complex surgery of thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms, treatment of complex forms of infective endocarditis, surgery for thromboembolism of pulmonary artery, correction of complex congenital heart defects in elderly patients, etc.

UCCC’s interventional electrophysiologists can perform any arrhythmogenic surgery that is currently carried out in the world. About 700 catheter ablations are performed annually at UCCC, which makes it one of the top three leading arrhythmogenic clinics in Ukraine. They perform surgeries of high complexity, such as implantation of cardiac resynchronization therapy devices, ventricular tachycardia ablation, and epicardial ablation. UCCC has developed a unique technique for catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation, which, by its effectiveness, is comparable to the results of the best clinics in the world.

Coronary angiography, a special procedure for coronary heart disease diagnostics, is also available at UCCC. Depending on the symptoms, balloon or stenting angioplasty is performed.

Prenatal diagnostics make it possible to detect heart defects of a fetus starting from 18 weeks of pregnancy and determine monitoring and therapeutic approach before the birth.

UCCC specialists have successfully implemented and developed clinical practices:

1) Cor-D Program – surgical treatment of congenital heart defects using autologous cord blood in the first hours of life;

2) Aortic Valve Neocuspidization Method – assigned to the patients with acquired and congenital aortic valve diseases;

3) “Bat Wings” Technique – surgical correction of pulmonary artery bifurcation stenosis;

4) Original Modification of Ross Operation Root Reinforcement Technique – prevents neo-aortic root dilatation in a long-term postoperative period;

5) Surgical Correction of Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection – a novel technique with an advantage of a reduced CPB duration and postoperative arrhythmogenic complications;

6) New Synthetic RV-PA Valve Conduit – shows excellent results compared to bioprosthetic valve after more than 10-year follow-up;

7) Advanced Original Heimlich type valve; predominantly implanted in tricuspid valve position; specially designed for tricuspid valve replacement in pediatric patients, including newborns; successfully tested on ten patients.

8)Xpand TAVI valve-new transcatheter transapical valve and delivery system.
