Our products

Product category: Instruments for the minimal-invasive surgery (MIS)
Steerable, multi-functional tools and platform concepts
Multi-functionality is one of the major requirements for innovative medical instruments as it reduces the need of tool change and contributes to
efficiency and reduction of trauma.

Increase of tool functionality on the other hand also may increase the
working load for the user in order to control the tool.

Modern platform concepts, also based on robotics technology and
appropriate interaction concepts, potentially solve that issue. Integration of
the research results regarding actuation technology and robotics, performed
in this project, is focused on applications ready to be evaluated in clinical
context.

R & D targets include the integration of Phase Change Actuators and
hydraulics actuators into surgical instruments, development of a prototype of
a multi-modal interaction platform for multi-functional tools, and
development of a (semi-)automatic needle insertion unit with active
steerable needles.

Product category: Instruments for the minimal-invasive surgery (MIS)
Novel actuators and process control in medical instrumentation
Increasing the functionality of micro tools while further reducing their size poses new challenges, e.g. in steering, force transmission and interaction with the tissue.Novel actuation principles for miniaturized tools are crucial for new functions and applications in micro catheters and endoscopic instruments.

In ACMIT „Phase Change Actuation“ (PCA) and micro-hydraulic systems are investigated and benchmarked with state of the art push-pull cable-type or shape memory micro actuators.

Functional models and prototypes are designed and evaluated. In addition, a mechatronic assistant for needle insertion is developed that reduces the
cutting force and needle bending. Transfer of the elaborated concept to different types of needle applicators is planned.

Product category: Instruments for the minimal-invasive surgery (MIS)
Functional anatomical models and surgical training systems
Functional models should be in terms of their appearance and their structure and also regarding their function and their mechanical properties much closer to the reality as models currently available on the market. We want to contribute to the avoidance of body tests in research and development of medical devices as well as in the education of doctors. Complex operations could also be trained with patient specific models generated by the 3D printers, which could improve surgical methods and increase patient safety.

About Us

Company details
ACMIT – From Idea to Clinical Use

The “Austrian Center for Medical Innovation and Technology” is a research and development center in the field of medical technology. Our development process comprises all steps from concept phase to the development and manufacturing of prototypes, including their clinical testing until release for mass production.

On customer request we offer contract manufacturing of medical devices.

ACMIT is certified according to EN ISO 13485.

Within the framework of the Austrian COMET program, ACMIT is supported by public funding and thus offers attractive conditions to medical technology companies.
What we do

ACMIT develops mechatronic systems and procedures for the purpose of making medical treatment less invasive, less risky and more efficient. ACMIT performs application-oriented and translational research and provides a clear benefit for patients, physicians and medical device manufacturers.

We are focused on minimally invasive surgical procedures and image-guided interventions. The activities are complemented by the development of tissue sensors and optical components.

We pay attention on a smooth integration of new technologies into the clinical workflow. We achieve this through appropriate interface design, usability analyses, and the development and manufacture of medical phantoms and complete training systems with associated course setups.

ACMIT partners with more than 60 company- and scientific partners, including internationally leading medical device manufacturers and cutting-edge medical and technical universities from Europe and beyond.

ACMIT is your partner during the complete innovation process and offers expertise, guidance and assistance in every single step!
