Catheter Packaging
Catheters are light, thin, flexible tubes with no sharp edges. Wipak has developed special packaging materials and dedicated solutions for a variety of catheters. Our packaging choices cover both coextruded films and paper webs. Also, we offer options such as antimicrobial treatments.

Reliable catheter packaging has been validated as fit for purpose and improving patient safety. In use of sterile catheters, the thin and flexible tube is inserted into the body to treat diseases or perform a surgical procedure. They allow drainage, administration of fluids or gases, access by surgical instruments, and completion of a host of other tasks, depending on the type of catheter.

There are many types of catheters, these thin, flexible tubes can be inserted in the body for diverse treatments or surgical procedures. Modifying the material or adjusting how the catheters are manufactured customizes them for cardiovascular, urological, gastrointestinal, neurovascular, or ophthalmic applications.

Solutions to Special Catheter Packaging Needs

Light devices, such as catheters, with no sharp edges do not require thick packaging or high mechanical strength from film. Suitable film thickness is normally 50 to 100 microns. The main requirement is sterilization by EO (a breathable element such as paper is needed as the top web) or by irradiation (a film–film packaging can be used).

Sterile water can be included in the catheter packaging in a separate chamber, from which it is easily squeezed down to the catheter before use. For packaging, this entails different seal-strength requirements: one seal must allow water to come out by squeezing, but it is absolutely vital for the other seals to stay unopened. In many cases, an aluminum-based film, such as Wipak AluMed, provides the necessary moisture barrier.

Wipak Solutions to Help Combat Urinary Tract Infections

Wipak’s medical packaging materials maintain the sterility of a catheter up to its point of use. Urinary tract infections affect millions of people each year and rank as the second most common type of bodily infection. Catheter-associated urinary tract infections are the most common nosocomial infections in acute-care and extended-care facilities.

Antimicrobial treatment helps to fight bacteria that live on the packaging surface. Its importance is especially clear in home care, where the care provider is seldom a healthcare professional. However, catheterizing correctly remains the top priority.

Drape and Gown Packaging
Single-use drapes and gowns have long contributed to prevention of healthcare-acquired infections. Reliable drape and gown packaging is validated as fit for its purpose and improves patient safety.

Surgical drapes and gowns are normally made of single-use non-woven fabrics that are strong, light, soft, and comfortable in use. Reduced fluff decreases risks of air-borne contamination when compared to regular woven textiles. Single-use drapes and gowns are made of breathable materials that ensure added convenience both for patients and for healthcare workers. For applications in which more fluid (such as blood) is present, a highly impermeable material is needed.

Solutions for Higher-Efficiency Packaging and Premium Performance

Wipak has developed unique materials and packaging solutions for the special requirements of packing drapes and gowns. Our award-winning expertise in printing matters is at your service. Cost-efficiency is today’s top issue. Wipak’s packaging solutions allow for production efficiency, increasing your output and reducing waste. There is also growing demand for sustainable products. We respond to this with our downgauged film structures. Packs’ appearance, strong resistance to mechanical forces, and peel-off characteristics are of great importance in drape and gown packaging. Reliable opening properties assure safe and contamination-free entry into use and contribute to user convenience.

Glove Packaging
Hand hygiene is of utmost importance in healthcare. Hundreds, even thousands, of medical-glove products are offered for covering hands safely in demanding procedures. Reliable glove packaging is validated as fit for its purpose and improves patient safety.

A vast selection of medical gloves, of various types, is available in the market for covering hands safely. Examination gloves are available in both sterile and non-sterile form. Surgical gloves are made to the highest standard. They are sterile and offer precise sizing with high precision and sensitivity. In the most demanding healthcare applications, double-gloving is required, for increased safety.

Wipak’s Barrier System for Gloves Maintains Sterility Until They Enter Use

Wipak has developed unique materials and solutions for the most demanding needs of glove packaging. Features such as non-curling are among the user requirements for aseptic handling of a package. Cost-efficiency is a major driver in healthcare. Our packaging materials for gloves are designed to work smoothly with your production operation, allowing high output and less waste. Our Multilayer film structures allow for downgauging – the same barrier properties can be achieved with lower material use. Less material per package leads to less material cost and can also help to reduce transportation costs.

IV Overwraps
Intravenous (IV) fluids such as colloids, crystalloids, blood products, and oxygen-carrying solutions, are chemically prepared solutions administered to the patient. They are tailored to the body’s needs and used to replace lost fluids, sugars, salts, fats, and other substances vital for the human body and/or to aid in the delivery of IV medications.

The IV-fluid bag has a medication injection port and administration set port. Both ports are on the bottom of the IV bag when it is held upright. The medication injection port permits the injection of medication into the fluid for use by a care provider. The administration set port receives the spike from the IV administration set (IV tubing).

Most IV fluids are packaged in soft plastic or vinyl bags, of various sizes, ranging from 10 to 3,000 milliliters. The most common plastic solutions for primary bags are either PVC- or polypropylene-based. For the secondary packaging, the overwrap is usually made from either PP or a PP/PA type of material. If a higher barrier is needed, packaging solutions are available with SiOx or AlOx layers that provide a barrier for the materials. Because IV fluids are almost solely sterilized by steam, the materials need to withstand temperatures of 110–125 °C / 230–260 °F very well.

Our Overwrap Films, Reliably Maintaining Sterility

Wipak offers both standard and high-barrier IV overwrap solutions that withstand sterilization, transportation, storage, and handling-related ruptures. Our products are PVC-free.

Instead of SiOx and AlOx materials, which break easily during handling and transportation, Wipak’s solution is based on an EVOH layer and a special production technique that allows fast barrier recovery after sterilization. The biggest advantage is that the material does not allow pinhole openings in the wrapping that could compromise the effectiveness of the product within.

For the producer, this means fewer claims related to defective packages; nurses end up with fewer unused packages; and patients enjoy greater safety.

Procedural Kit Packaging
Safety and cost-efficiency in healthcare are steadily growing trends. Single-use instruments and ready-made procedural kits improve the efficiency and safety of surgical operations and other procedures. Reliable kit packaging is validated as fit for its purpose of use and as improving patient safety.

Wipak’s Window Bag, for ease of use

They feature a large window for readily knowing the contents
The design facilitates proper aseptic opening

Higher Efficiency and Greater Patient Safety

Hospitals and other healthcare facilities are outsourcing more and more of their procedures for handling sterile products. Industrially manufactured and sterilized OR sets yield cost savings and improve patient safety.

Procedural kits are common in operating rooms (ORs) nowadays. A set may contain up to 300 individual components, including gauzes, gowns, sponges, tubing, a basin, etc. Each kit is customized for a certain surgical procedure, even a specific hospital or surgeon.

In surgical operations, every fraction of a second lost counts as wasted time and can add to human suffering. A well-designed procedural-kit package makes it easy for the staff to pick up and use the right set of items.

Renal Therapy Packaging
Renal replacement therapy replaces the function of kidneys for patients with renal failure and also is occasionally used in response to some forms of poisoning. Reliable puncture-resistance and transparency of the film component are important features for a renal therapy packaging system.

Sharp Growth in the Need for Renal Therapy

Forms of therapy, systems, and products for this life-supporting treatment are expanding rapidly. In tandem with the increasing need, packaging systems are evolving, for improved patient safety and convenience.

Wipak’s efficient multilayer film packaging provides excellent puncture-resistance. Our PA/PE-based products are strong, and they feature good transparency. We offer film products also for flowpack solutions.

The Basics of Renal Replacement Therapy

Renal replacement therapy (RRT) is divided into two main types: peritoneal, performed primarily in emergency rooms and in developing countries, and hemodialysis, which is practiced at dialysis centers. Techniques include intermittent hemodialysis, continuous hemofiltration and hemodialysis, and peritoneal dialysis. All modalities exchange solute and remove fluid from the blood, using dialysis and filtration across permeable membranes.

During dialysis, serum solute diffuses passively between fluid compartments down a concentration gradient (diffusive transport). During filtration, serum water passes between compartments down a hydrostatic pressure gradient, dragging solute with it (convective transport). The two processes are often used in combination (hemodiafiltration). Hemoperfusion is a rarely used technique that removes toxins by passing blood over a bed of adsorbent material.

Dialysis and filtration may be performed either intermittently or continuously. Continuous therapy, employed exclusively for acute kidney injury, is sometimes better tolerated than intermittent therapy in unstable patients, because solute and water are removed more slowly. All forms of RRT except peritoneal dialysis require vascular access; continuous techniques require a direct arteriovenous or venovenous circuit.

The choice of technique depends on several factors, including the primary need (solute or water removal or both), underlying indication (poisoning or acute or chronic kidney failure), vascular access, hemodynamic stability, availability, local expertise, and patient preference and capability (e.g., for home dialysis).

Urinary and Drainage Packaging
Wipak’s soft and comfortable Ecoking film is a key component in the manufacture of PVC-free urine and drainage bags.

Urine bags can be sterile or non-sterile. They are equipped with a connector that ensures secure attachment to the urinary catheter. A drainage valve prevents backflow of urine and risk of an ascending infection, and it guarantees convenient emptying of the urine bag.

High Patient Comfort and Safety

Urine bags are manufactured from a semi-transparent material, for improved monitoring. A scale on the bag allows ready assessment of urine volume. Some haziness is preferable to hide the urine from sight.

The materials should be comfortable to use in skin contact and not produce noise: using a urine bag should remain private.

Wipak’s Ecoking is an excellent material for use in urine drainage bags. It is a soft non-PVC film that is comfortable, hazy, and ready for printing with your design of your choice. Ecoking is available also in white.

Greater Efficiency and Performance in Manufacture of Urine Bags

Wipak’s Ecoking films are delivered in various thicknesses, and they improve your productivity

Increased output
Higher packaging machine efficiency
Lower package material costs, thanks to the downgauging features of our films

Reasons for needing a urine bag and catheter include urinary incontinence (leakage), urine retention (not being able to urinate), surgery that necessitates a catheter, and other health problems.

There are two kinds of urine bag: a leg bag, for daytime use, and a night bag, which is usually larger and used in bed. Urine is drained via an indwelling catheter that is inside the patient’s bladder. Pediatric urine bags are used for collecting urine from infants.
